About Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park encompasses two separate districts east and west of Tucson, Arizona, preserving large expanses of Sonoran Desert dominated by the giant saguaro cactus, the universal symbol of the American Southwest. Established in 1994 primarily to protect these towering cacti, the park spans approximately 91,000 acres across the Tucson Mountains (West District) and the Rincon Mountains (East District). The landscape varies from low desert valleys to higher elevation woodlands, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna including desert tortoises, coyotes, Gila monsters, and over 60 species of mammals and 200 species of birds. The park also preserves archaeological sites reflecting the Native American presence and historical mining in the region. Visitors can hike miles of trails that pass through dense cactus forests, rocky canyons, and mountain ridges. Popular activities include guided nature walks, birdwatching, horseback riding, and photography. Notable landmarks include Signal Hill with ancient petroglyphs and the scenic Cactus Forest Drive offering panoramic desert views. The park’s proximity to Tucson makes it accessible for day trips and camping opportunities in surrounding national forests extend outdoor adventures. Saguaro National Park appeals to visitors seeking to experience iconic desert landscapes, rugged hiking trails, and the unique ecosystems of the Sonoran Desert.
